How to Break Into IT With No Experience

IT is one of the few well-paying fields you can still enter without a degree, because it rewards demonstrable skill over pedigree. The catch is the "no experience, need experience" loop. Here's how to break it.

Step 1 — Target the right first role

Almost everyone starts at the help desk or desktop support. It's not glamorous, but it's the on-ramp: you learn the tools, the tickets, and the environment while getting paid, and it leads to sysadmin, networking, security, or cloud within a year or two. Aim here first, not at a senior title.

Step 2 — Earn one credential that opens doors

You don't need a stack of certs. One entry credential — CompTIA A+ for general IT, or Network+ if you're leaning toward networking — is enough to clear the résumé filter for most help-desk roles. Pick one, schedule the exam, and let the deadline pull you through the studying.

Step 3 — Build a home lab (your experience substitute)

A home lab is how you honestly answer "do you have experience?" with "yes." It's cheap or free:

• Spin up a couple of virtual machines (VirtualBox is free) — one Windows, one Linux.
• Set up a small network, share files, break things, and fix them.
• Try Active Directory in a trial, or a Raspberry Pi running a service on your home network.
• Write down what you built. That's a talking point that beats any bullet on a résumé.

Step 4 — Apply wide and interview well

Apply to more roles than feels comfortable, tailor the résumé to each, and prep the fundamentals until you can explain them out loud. Entry interviews test whether you can think and whether you're easy to work with — not whether you know everything.

A realistic timeline

Studying part-time, most people can earn an entry cert and build a basic lab in about 90 days, then land a first role in the following one to three months of applying. It's not instant — but it's a real, walkable path, and it doesn't require money you don't have.
